The Prophet of Dune was a sequel to the story Dune World, both written by Frank Herbert and published in Analog magazine.

The Prophet of Dune was serialized in five parts:

  • Part 1 - January 1965 issue of Analog
  • Part 2 - February 1965 issue of Analog
  • Part 3 - March 1965 issue of Analog
  • Part 4 - April 1965 issue of Analog
  • Part 5 - May 1965 issue of Analog

It was later integrated with the preceding serialization Dune World to become the published novel Dune (1965).

The title of the second serialization refers to the latter half of the story, in which Paul Muad'Dib is viewed as a prophet by the Fremen.

Cover art and illustrations[]

Besides internal illustrations, the January and March covers of Analog magazine were themed after The Prophet of Dune, with all of the serialization's illustrations and both of the covers created by John Schoenherr. The January cover was later reused for the dust jacket of the first edition of the completed Dune novel. The March cover was one of the first illustrated depictions of Dune's sandworms, and the first in colour.
